Maple Syrup

Maple syrup comes from a maple tree. There are many maple trees in the state of Maine. In order to get the sap flowing, you must cut the bark of the tree and "skin" it. The sap will flow out of the tree. Before the sap begins to flow, you must put a bucket under the areas that you have skinned. The sap will slowly fill the bucket over a period of several days. It is fun to check the buckets each day. In order to make syrup, you must boil the sap. There are many grades of maple syrup. It is fun to gather sap and boil it into syrup. The fresh maple syrup is VERY YUMMY!

Potatoes

There are a lot of potatoes in Maine! In fact 90% of the potatoes harvested in the United States come from Maine. Maine is the third largest potato state after Idaho and Washington. This industry is the largest in the state of Maine. The climate and soil here are excellent for growing potatoes. Most of the potatoes in Maine are grown in Aroostook County. Children in that county have no school when it is time to harvest the potatoes. Everyone in the county is needed to help with the harvest. So the next time you have potatoes, check the bag and see if those potatoes were grown in Maine.

Fiddle heads

Fiddle heads are a vegetable that we eat in Maine. They grow wild in wet, moist areas. If you walk in the woods, you will find them closest to a stream, right in the middle of a bunch of ferns. They look similar to a fern with a curly top. Fiddle heads are great in salads and they are especially yummy after they have been steamed. If you have never tried them, come on up to Maine and enjoy this taste sensation!
